Birdwatching near La Lucertola

1: Monte Pisani (Pisan Hills) - where we are. Near coastal hills up to 900m high. Protected area, mainly forest, on the upper slopes of chestnut, oak and pine. Great not too strenuous walking with sea views (7 miles away) and forestry commision maintained trails.

2: San Rossore National Park - 5 miles away. A coastal maritime pine and wetland area - nature reserve and education centre. 23,000 hectares.   http://www.parcomsrm.it
Herons, Egrets, wild ducks, Buzzards, Stilt. They also have a first class racecourse... where Frankie Dettori started life. It also includes a large lagoon: Torre del Lago - where Giacomo Puccini owned a house which is now a musuem and where he wrote his most famous works such as La Bohmeme, Madame Butterfly etc

3:  Alpe Apuane. - near coastal mountains starting about 10 miles north of us. Reaching almost 2000 metres in height. They contain the famous Michelangelo marble caves. Fantastic walking. I'm not a personal expert on this zone but we have a friend who is a qualified guide and excellent English speaker and she does accompanied walks in this area. Med mountain birds....

4: Garfangana Valley - the adjacent mounatin range from the Alpe Apuane, a little further inland. Very lush, green and beautiful. Eagle, etc. Also wolves and wild boar. Great walking and very hearty mountain eating. Good stuff! http://www.garfagnanavacanze.it
