Summer visitor to Europe. Once
bred commonly in Britain in suitable habitat, now only an occasional
pair breed. Can still be found as a scarce passage mirgant,
mainly along the east coast.

| Description |
Male has distinctive combination of grey
crown and rump, black mask and pale pinkish breast, with extensive
white base of tail. Female duller, browner and more scaly.
